St Marys storm to massive win
St Marys has stormed to a massive 105-run win over St Arnaud at Anzac Park in round 10 of the Wimmera Mallee Cricket Association.
After winning the toss and batting, the home side started steady. After losing Colby Schmidt for 12, trapped in front for LBW by Jacob Patching, Nicholas Germano and Bailey Watts put on a 67-run partnership.
When Germano fell for 41, Leigh Somers came to the crease. He hit the ball well, and despite losing Bailey Watts shortly after, with help from Nathan Priest, he guided St Marys to their biggest total of the year, 7/227. He narrowly missed his century by four runs, remaining unbeaten on 96.
Priest scored 23, and Bailey Watts scored 37. Jacob Patching and Kynan Torney took 2/37 (8) and 2/29 (5) respectively.
Brodie Dennes and Bailey Watts troubled St. Arnaud's top order and, with Hugh Nixon's help, had St Arnaud 3/39.
Ned Gorrie and Jacob Patching were able to put on a 35-run partnership, but when Gorrie fell for 25, St Arnaud was in trouble at 4/74.
Despite Patching scoring 32, St Mary's bowling was solid. In the 27th over, they bowled St Arnaud out for 122.
Leigh Somers was the pick of the St Marys bowlers with 3/28 (6).
At the Hopetoun Recreation Reserve, Birchip had little trouble in their seven-wicket win over the Southern Mallee Giants.
After winning the toss and batting, the Giants were bowled out for 64 after 23 overs. Jonty Bellinger top scored with 23 while Jayson Kiem scored 10.
Jonty Randall did the damage with the ball for Birchip, claiming 6/19 (8), which featured four maidens.
