Horsham Lawn overcome St Michaels

Round eight of the Central Wimmera Tennis Association took place on Saturday, November 22, with Horsham Lawn and Central Park producing victories in the pennant competition.

Saturday’s pennant matches featured an altered format, with each contest comprising four singles matches for men and women, as well as two one-set doubles matches for men and women. 

Each singles match would play two sets, with a 10-point tiebreaker deciding any match in which both players won a set each. 

Playing at Horsham Lawn, St Michaels won three of the four men’s singles rubbers.

Steve Schultz defeated Lachlan Punchard 6-5 6-2; Eli Bailey defeated August Koch 6-1 6-5; and Peter Hayes defeated D’Artagnan Walls 6-5 6-4. 

Graeme Wood got Horsham Lawn on the board with a 6-5, 6-0 victory over Nick Robertson. 

Horsham Lawn got the better of St Michaels in the women’s singles, as Ella Thompson defeated Mia Rees 6-1 6-1, Lydi Boyd defeated Violet McGennisken 6-3, 6-1, Luisa Boddi defeated Ayva Robertson 6-1 6-2, while St Michael’s Kassie Peachey defeated Gemma Walker in a tight encounter, 6-4 4-6 (10-4), leaving Horsham Lawn with a slight 9-7 set lead entering the doubles. 

Horsham Lawn proceeded to win three out of the four doubles rubbers to claim a 12-8 victory. 

D’Artagnan Walls and Graeme Wood defeated Peter Hayes and Nick Robertson 8-2, Ella Thompson and Lydi Boyd defeated Mia Rees and Violet McGennisken 8-2, Gemma Walker and Luis Boddi beat Kassie Peachey and Ayva Robertson 8-3, while St Michaels’ Steve Schultz and Eli Bailey defeated Lachlan Punchard and August Koch 8-4. 

Playing at home, Central Park proved too strong for Kalkee, taking a 15-5 win. 

Both sides played competitive matches in the men’s singles, leaving them at 4-4.

For Central Park, Matt Jones defeated Jeff Friberg 4-6 6-4 (10-5), and Reece Harman defeated Ryan Fischer 6-0 6-0, while Kalkee’s Jordan Friberg defeated Harry Allan 6-5 3-6 (10-6), and Grant Schultz defeated Frazer Shurdington 6-5 6-3. 

Central Park prevailed in all of the women’s singles, as Willow Sainsbury defeated Meaghan Pohlner 6-1 6-0, Adele Joseph defeated Emily Polack 6-1 6-0, Sienna Nitschke defeated Anna Exell 6-2 6-1, and Tara McIntyre overcame Keeley Schultz in a 6-5 5-6 (10-6) thriller. 

Central Park then swept the doubles matches, as Harry Allan and Matt Jones defeated Jordan and Jeff Friberg 8-4, Frazer Shurdington and Reece Harman defeated Grant Schultz and Ryan Fischer 8-3, Willow Sainsbury and Adele Joisephy defeated Meaghan Pohlner and Emily Polack 8-2, and Sienna Nitschke and Tara McIntyre overcame Anna Exell and Keeley Schultz 8-4.
